What Is This Thing?
An exposed circuit board with a buzzer, a battery clip and a radio receiver, packaged with a keyfob remote. Hide the board somewhere — behind a monitor, above a ceiling tile, inside a drawer — and trigger it from across the room.
It does not play music. It emits the kind of short, high, intermittent noise that the human ear is famously bad at locating: a chirp, a beep, the sound a smoke alarm makes when its battery is dying. Volume and interval are adjustable.
The board is sold bare, without a case. That is not a defect. A case would make it findable.
Why You Don't Need It
It produces no useful sound. It has no application outside making a colleague slowly lose confidence in their own hearing.
It is also the prank on this site most likely to be genuinely resented, because unlike a spider in a box it does not resolve. It just continues.
Why You'll Buy It Anyway
Because the low-battery chirp is one of the few sounds that can reduce a competent adult to crawling around under furniture, and doing that to someone on purpose is very funny for about four minutes.
The remote is the part that makes it work. You are in the room. You are watching. You are also looking for it.
Who It's Actually For
Offices, shared houses, and long-standing prank rivalries where escalation is expected. This is a step above a whoopee cushion and everyone involved should know that.
It is also, quietly, a decent test of whether your workplace has a sense of humour.
before you click buy
Know when to stop. This is funny as a bit and tiresome as a campaign, and the difference is measured in hours.
The board is unhoused, so it needs somewhere dry and safe to sit — not loose in a pocket, not near anything conductive. Check whether a battery is included, and be certain you can retrieve it before you hide it somewhere clever.
